a stellar story of a woman's rebirth

it's been about two years since i read this fantastical tale of coventry dakin's "lost and found" of self. although this novel is about a grown woman it is remeniscent of her adrian mole books in that it's about a person quite lost in the world they exist in. coventry is on the run, but from what and for how long has she really been running? it's a tale of assumed names and identities, of wacky professors and unbelievably dysfunctional families, the suburbs and the city. it's a quick read and a quality one as well. if you enjoyed kureshi's buddah of suburbia or atwood's edible woman, be prepared to jump into yet another world that reflects your own much more than you'd ever admit

Don't Be Daft... 'Aven't You Heard Of Parrots?

For reference, I came across this story in the summer of 2005 when Christopher Eccleston read it for the BBC's "CBeebies Bedtime Hour" (for us non-Brits: celebrities reading bedtime stories on the tele for the little tykes). As of writing this, I'm 21, and still enjoyed this delightful little tale.

Like the description states, it's the story about two monkeys that are awake during different times of the day and what happens when they come together and share their different worlds - worlds that are only seperated by day and night. For instance, Day Monkey asks why there's a big banana in the sky and Night Monkey tells him it's the moon. It's like that all through the story; black monkeys versus shadows, blinking eyes in the dark versus fireflies, and the answer always begins with the line "Don't be daft..." which is so completely and utterly British, I love it to pieces. :)

I'm single, and even though all my nieces and nephews are too old for this one, I still bought the book on the off chance I would have a child to share it with. But then you're talking to a big kid at heart who still watches Rollie Pollie Ollie, so what do I know. ;)

Cheeky Monkeys

I love this book. My daughter has a plush monkey that she cuddles up with when we read this delightful book. The illustrations are bright and beautiful. The text is sweet and lyrical. Unlike most children's books, I don't get the slightest bit tired of reading it over and over and over again.

I deducted one star from my review for the idiot of a graphic designer who put black type on a dark blue background. Luckily, after the 15th or so reading, I had it pretty much memorized, but still. Making your readers squint to try to work out what the book says is pretty weak, particularly with high gloss pages on a book made to be read in the low light of a baby's bedroom.

Later in the story, he finds himself caught up in the turmoil caused by the dark family secret of his best, and only friend. Anacleto experiences the ecstasy of first love and plunges headlong into a series of rapturously heady sexual encounters. At the same time, he wrestles with his own family problems and with questions having to do with religious belief, free speech, and the war in Vietnam (two of his older brothers serve in the armed forces, one of whom returns home badly scarred, physically and emotionally). And then, there’s the gun...the one that is lost and which leads to so much misfortune. The powerful and ironic climax of The Outcast Prophet of Bensonhurst leaves all of the main characters damaged. The Outcast Prophet of Bensonhurst

If you like quirky characters, realistic dialogues, carefully construed plots and unexpected endings, this might be the book for you. Marco Manfrey, its author, provides a five star characterization of his protagonist, Anacleto, a speech impaired individual with academic promise, who faces the urban challenges of being raised by a single parent. The Brooklyn neighborhood in which Anacleto is reared proves to jeopardize his core with available drugs, a growing plethora of low life individuals and an unfortunate lack of meaningful relationships.
"Coming of age" issues like social detachment, peer acceptance, and sexual experimentation are interwoven beautifully into this carefully built plot. All the while, the young protagonist searches endlessly to define his own identity in the chaotic and "out of control" world about him.
This is a "must" reading for individuals particularly empathetic with those that "dare to be different!" You won't be disappointed!

Marco Manfre has created an unlikely protagonist in Anacleto "Clete" Roosevelt. Good-hearted, perceptive, and unassuming, Clete is the kind of young man that everyone else counts on, and most of the characters in this novel desperately need someone like him. Clete's troubled friend Santo, his radical classmate Rudy, and Anne, Clete's on-again off-again girlfriend, are only a few of the unforgettable characters who cross Clete's path. The multiple subplots involving Clete's friends and family tie up well in the last few pages in a realistic and not especially happy ending, as Clete admits "I made choices long ago and now I have to live with their consequences."

Held my attention beginning to end!

Could not put this book down once I started as this was the type of character I sometimes like to read, only this one was written so well, that you are actually drawn into his sympathetic, sad world of his scared, shy personality that envelopes his life as an outcast and loner. As he meets and is engaged by three others thru his teen years, also outcasts in their own rights, his life changes for better and worse. I felt so bad for this kid, Anacleto, and wanted him to prevail and live happily ever after. but as his experiences continue to tug at your heart, and he always tries to do the right thing, you feel like he is always caught in someone else mess and can't get out. Nonetheless, don't want to give story away, as you will feel and fall in love with this teen and his circumstances of his life. Definitely give this book a read as you won't want to put down either!

It takes a bit of ploughing through, but if you're curious ...

At first this book fascinated me, but it is really long-winded, because Dolores Cannon feels honor bound to explain the process (through which she accessed Nostradamus himself) in great detail. I find Dolores very honest and straight-forward, and the 3 stars do not reflect on her amazing body of work. I confess that halfway through this book I started skimming a bit, but then read the last part more thoroughly.

However, I was disappointed by all the explanations of things (by Nostradamus through the hypnotized subjects) which have already happened, such as the world wars, the troubles in the Middle East, Chernobyl, etc. Also, as it is now 2014, it does not seem as if some of the dire predictions came true -- at least, not in quite the horrible form which was apparently predicted. Maybe we did something right, maybe we did "change the future", as Nostradamus suggested we are able to do with positive thoughts and genuine effort.

It did irritate me somewhat that -- apart from world events in which Europe, Japan and Russia had been involved -- Dolores tended in her questions to concentrate on "what will happen in the USA". Considering that Nostradamus lived in the 15th century, in France, I felt that her questions should have included more of the great wide world! I live in South Africa, but there was no mention of Africa at all (I might have skipped it, but I doubt it). It happens so often that such metaphysical non-fiction written in the USA centres far too much around America, disregarding the fact that there are other continents, other peoples, other countries out there! We "others" are also curious as to what Nostradamus might have said about other places!

Although the content of the book sounds completely above board, and I do not doubt that Dolores was genuine, I confess to a slight nagging doubt: was she really accessing the mind of the real Michel de Nostredame? Was there no chance it could have been a spirit imposter? But maybe this is an unfair thought. I give the always-sincere writer the benefit of the doubt. By all means, read the book and you may find the real clues to his confusing quatrains which have never been satisfactorily translated or interpreted elsewhere. (The many translations all differ in interpretation).

In September 11 Kent Roach provides a critical examination of the consequences of September 11 for law, democracy, sovereignty, and security. He assesses a broad range of anti-terrorism measures including the Anti-terrorism Act, the smart border agreement, Canadian participation in the war in Afghanistan, changes to refugee policy, the 2001 Security Budget, and the proposed Public Safety Act. Roach evaluates both the opposition of many civil society groups to the Anti-terrorism Act and the government's defence of the law as necessary to prevent terrorism and consistent with human rights. He warns that exceptions to legal principles made to fight terrorism may spread to attempts to combat other crimes and suggests that Canadian law may not provide adequate protection against invasions of privacy or discriminatory profiling of people as potential terrorists. With reference to controversial comments about September 11 made by Prime Minister Chretien and others and the debate about "anti-Americanism," Roach examines whether September 11 has chilled Canadian democracy. He also examines the challenge September 11 presents for Canadian sovereignty on key components of foreign, military, and immigration policy and the possibility that Canadian Forces participated in violations of international law in Afghanistan. With specific reference to the threat of nuclear and biological terrorism and aviation safety, Roach argues that more emphasis on administrative and technological measures and less emphasis on criminal sanctions and military force may better protect Canadians from both terrorism and other threats to their security.

Little disappointing

So - I have had my Gelli plate a couple of years and it is very addictive and I love it so pre-ordered this book with excitement. I am a bit disappointed though...while the book is well written, clearly laid out with great photos and step by steps, there wasn't much in it that I hadn't seen already online - particularly on the Gelli Arts blog and facebook pages. If you are new to Gelli plate printing this is a great way of getting loads of ideas all in one place, and if experienced gelliplaters want a technique collection too then I recommend this book, but don't expect any mind blowing new techniques. There is also a beautiful gallery of artists work - but again I found this a little frustrating as there were no explanations as to how the pieces were created, if I'd wanted a book of art I would have bought one - I wanted a book that was going to teach me lots of new stuff but unfortunately this wasn't it.

Must Have for Gelli Plate Printing

Joan Bess does a fabulous job introducing the reader to the addiction, oops - world, of Gelli printing. The book covers many many techniques and opens up the world of monoprinting. If you have a Gelli Plate you should buy this book and if you are interested in mono printing of any kind you should also buy this book! I've made my own gelatin plates and done monoprinting on acrylic and nothing is a good as doing it on a Gelli Plate.

Great ideas for using your Gelli Plate

Some of the information in this book can be easily accessed in tutorials and blogs online but some of the techniques are new and innovative. This book is great for someone just beginning to experiment with mixed media but not a huge ammount of information here for very experienced artists. The gelli plate is lots of fun and the techniques in this book further expands the uses for it. ****This review has been revised from my original comments******
