About the Author
Since a child, I have been driven to explore, look beyond and seek change. This took me to the Fiji Islands on Volunteer Service Abroad at eighteen and after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Auckland, to Italy, where I stayed for the next decade. I had been out to conquer the world but instead met the man who was to become my lifelong companion. While he studied and did military service, I taught English and travelled. But the settling down bug caught up with me. I returned to New Zealand, husband in tow, bought a house, started up a business in the fashion industry and had a baby. For many years we worked, worried, renovated houses and homeschooled our son who now has a degree in architecture and is studying for a second degree in design, specialising in photography. We currently live in a house overlooking the Pacific Ocean and I work in real estate. In my free time, I am a photographer and food blogger. www.strandsofmylife.com is a blog about my food journey towards great health. In my other free time, I write books. Writing is a channel for ideas and feelings which manifest themselves in words to create a story with the ability to make readers feel. I hope I manage to stir the emotions in readers which I experience while writing my novels. I now have eight published books. I read all the time – anything from women’s fiction to thrillers. If I don’t have a book on the go, I feel bereft and centreless. Yes, that’s a word – I think.

~~The Earth Shook and the Rivers Boiled ~~

Teenagers at an Outdoor Pursuits School are in the midst of tragedy and devastation. A few of the lucky (?) ones were kayaking and able to flee upwards into the hills.

This is a story of teenage survival against all odds. This group consists of 6 and are all different in personalities. Nyeta, age 17, is the only one with any sort of medical experience. Ethical questions come to surface when treating some severely injured survivors.

The reader will take a leap of faith when Nyeta slips and falls a great distance. Just put your imagination into high gear and go along for the drop!

I liked the interactions of these teenagers trying to adapt in a new world. Just knowing each other in passing prior to this quake, they had to adapt as a group in order to survive. Shelter, food and water were paramount in their minds.. Plus, they all wanted to get to the CITY to see if any of their family members survived.

Wait until you meet James! He is a story by himself.... A true survivor of previous hardship(s)!

Excellent book with Universal Appeal!

I recently read and reviewed a book, Fierce Mind, which I loved so much that I downloaded another of the author's books, hoping for the same level of thought-provoking entertainment. Upheaval did not disappoint. It's another five-star, incredible book! Within pages of the opening there is a devastating earthquake in New Zealand that leaves seventeen-year-old Nyeta and five classmates stranded alone in the wilderness.

The book chronicles the teens' interactions as they make their way towards the nearest city, hoping to find their families untouched by the devastation. They pass through farms and small towns, all in ruins. They deal with life-threatening injuries, encounter sinister looters, and experience the horror of coming across the dead victims of the earthquake. Nyeta and her friends have to handle decisions that will decide whether each of them lives or dies. Their only hope, as they forage through rough terrain, is that they'll find help in the city when they reach it. They have an inkling that all is not well in the city when they witness airliners crashing, running out of fuel when they can't find a place to land.

The book moved along quickly and kept me at the edge of my seat as the story drew me in, into the shock and fear of the situation. The way the survivors of the surrounding towns quickly organized, becoming defensive and ready to kill for the remaining resources, could easily have turned Upheaval into a nightmarish story. But, the kindness between the teens and the sweet, caring romance that developed between Nyeta and Darryl made Upheaval more a story of friendships that strengthen through adversity.

Survival stories don't usually appeal to me. When I think "survival story" I think of Gary Paulson's books. His books, although engaging and well-written, never grabbed my interest, probably because I think of them as "boy books." And, there aren't many "boy books" out there. So many teen novels are written from a girl protagonist's point of view and involve subject matter that truly doesn't interest boys. So, as I was reading Upheaval, it occurred to me that although it is written from a girl's point of view, teen boys would love this book.

Besides having universal appeal, I enjoyed how each character's personality unfolded as their challenges brought out their strengths. And, I especially grew to love Marsh as he started out as a self-centered jerk, but became a staunch protector of the group.

Things I liked: The protectiveness and caring among Nyeta and her friends, the suspense as the teens near the city, James, the unusual character they encounter, and the thought-provoking, moral decisions Nyeta has to make.

Things I didn't like: I was somewhat irked by Nyeta's fixation on finding adults who would care for them. But, I suppose if I were seventeen, I might be looking for adults and assuming they'd help too.

Overall: Truly terrific, ultra-engaging book that would appeal to teen boys as well as teen girls, but is also a crossover book that adults would love too.

Well, the author edited her own book. Bad idea. Really bad. I found many, many errors, which distracted from the story. The story has an interesting concept - Nyeta is a student at an "outdoor pursuits" school and is kayaking with other students when a huge earthquake sets off a couple of volcanoes and triggers the end of the world as they knew it. Nyeta survives and together with several other surviving students they make their way through the dangerous wilderness trying to get to "the city" where their families live. "The city" is never named and the setting is never really identified, which is a bit annoying. They see lots of dead people, get guns to defend themselves, and Nyeta's first aide skills that she knows because her father is a doctor makes her the nurse/doctor whenever anyone is injured. It is a rather typical YA dystopian novel with a little romance and lots of death defying action, but the large amount of editing errors and lack of description of the setting detracts from the story. I hope that the author hires an actual editor for future books because that is really necessary. I received this book free to review from Netgalley.

She flirts with prurience, with ideas of privacy and surveillance, eroticism and pornography, but seems more satisfied when approaching the complications of love or being in love." Beautifully illustrated, Carnal Knowledge contains 77 color reproductions of these photographs, as well as new texts from James Ellroy and Neville Wakefield, a preface by Gregory Crewdson, short stories inspired by Marder's work by A. M. Homes, James Frey and Bruce Wagner, and a Q & A for Marder devised by Philip-Lorca diCorcia. It is the first volume to collect these works and to bring Marder's work to a wider audience.

Disappointing rehash

Oh Dear! This is a completerehash, including photographs, duplicating 'Best Ever Indian Cooking'and Complete Indian Cooking' down to the last mint leaf! Same recipes, nothing new, if you have one book, you have the lot. I bought, in all innocence, all three and find, all too late that they are just copies under a different title. Nothing really 'Classic' in the whole publication really. I have some 150 books on curries, this one ranks way down the line.

This book has more than I could have wanted. I did find a few recipies that I was specifically looking for and found in this book. If I were a better cook, I would have given this book 5 stars. There are so many recipies to choose from. I liked that the index was broken down into type of food.

A Great Bargain!

I'm a fan of Indian food. This cookbook was a bargain. Just $2.99 for the Kindle version. Plenty of classic recipes.

The formatting for weights and amounts in he recipes can be hard to read, sometimes. Especially fractions.

The book includes both metric and standard measures. The problem is, one or the either is often a weird measure. For example, when 500g. are called for, a recipe will call for 1.2 lbs. It would be better to adjust the total volume of the recipe and use something more standard. Like 1 lb. or 1.5 lb. Likewise, the metric weights are sometimes squirrelly, too.

In 1780, when Scurry was 14 years old, he set on a voyage from Plymouth Sound on the Hannibal. However, he, along with his crew, were captured by the French at Saint Helena. They were handed over to Hyder Ali by the French admiral Suffren. Hyder deported Scurry and the 15 young men to Seringapatam. The 15 men were all circumcised, converted to Islam and forcibly conscripted to Tipu's army. James Scurry was given the Islamic name, Shamsher Khan. As soon as Scurry was captured, he was put in heavy leg-irons and marched into a strong prison.[6] Later, Hyder ordered him and his crew to march to Bangalore.[7] Scurry was then sent to Burrampour, a three-day march from Bangalore. The food offered was rice for the first eight to ten days, which was then changed to Ragi flour. Scurry had the misfortune of being overlooked, along with 100 other English prisoners in the prisoner release incorporated in the treaty of 1784. Scurry on his own account explains how he escaped from the fort of Chitterdroog (Chitradurga). Once he tried to escape with some more of his colleagues, but after some distance, returns on fears of being spotted. Again, he escapes in the next try, but this time, they venture into the forest to avoid being detected. They camp in multiple places, and try entering a couple of forts. They finally seek the help of Marathas in a fort, from where they leave for the English encampments in a fort north of Karnataka.He was greeted by an old Scottish colleague, Mr. Little, who was startled to find Scurry and his companions in the ragged uniform of Tippu's army.[5] James further narrates how they are redeployed, and marched backwards to the Carnatic to help plan the final assault on Mysore by Lord Cornwallis. Due to some circumstances, his friends are divided into two groups, and one group is sent to Bombay, and he is sent to Madras. In Madras, he boards Dutton, a ship to send him back to England, and he reaches Down in England. He also tells that even though his release was negotiated between Tipu and the British, it was not implemented for reasons unknown. Instead he was abruptly shifted along with many other prisoners to Chitterdroog. During this shift, James fears for his life, as he was taken to a place where some of his colleagues Captain Rumney, and Lieutenants Fraser and Sampson, had their throats cut. Scurry left behind his wife and child, a girl. He had grown to love her, and in his memoir describes the immense pain he felt in having to part from them in the night as his battalion was being mustered and his decision of escaping being made. After the 10-year captivity ended, James Scurry recounted that he had forgotten how to sit in a chair and use a knife and fork. His English was broken and stilted, having lost all his vernacular idiom. His skin had darkened to the 'swarthy complexion of negroes', and moreover, he had developed an aversion to wearing European clothes. Scurry later reverted to Christianity, upon his return to England.

About the Author
James Scurry (1766–1822) was a British soldier and memoirist. He was held captive by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan for 10 years (1780–1790) at Seringapatam. He had been kept as a prisoner, first at Bangalore and then moved to the Seringapatnam ( modern day name is Srirangapatnam) fort. After his escape from Tipu's army, in Chitradurg (called Chitterdroog) he reached an English camp. He prepared a narrative of his captivity in 1794, but it was not published until 1824, after his death. He is well known for his memoir The captivity, sufferings, and escape of James Scurry, who was detained a prisoner during ten years, in the dominions of Hyder Ali and Tippoo Saib (1824), which relates the sufferings and treatment of the captured English soldiers, Mangalorean Catholics, and other prisoners of war by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the rulers of the Kingdom of Mysore in India.
